A new video has been added to the Private Members area of the M5 Video Guide. It is a video about a very special 2003 Dinan S2 E39 M5 with some other very cool and useful modifications including:

* Front and back cameras you can watch on the nav screen
* Removable subwoofer
* Stop Tech Big Brake Kit (and opened brake ducts)
* Upgraded sway bar mounts
* Satellite Radio
* Custom, illuminated short-shifter

In addition, there’s a great DIY section for replacing something we all break sooner or later … and that’s the lower air dam, black plastic cover underneath the fog lights.

I hope you enjoy watching this new video. It can be found on the “Home” tab of the Private Members area.

And here’s a little backgrounder on the vehicles. The first incarnation of the M5 was hand-built using the 535i chassis and a modified BMW M1 engine. Subsequent iterations of the M5 have been made from various 5-Series generations including the E28, E34, E39 M5 and most recently the E60 and E61.

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW Series compact car. M3 models have been derived from the E30, E36, E46 and E90/E92/E93 3-series.

In this vid, the E39 M5 is modified with Magnaflow Cans, Dinan Intakes and Dinan SI Tune while the E92 M3 is a stock car.

The sound of the engine is just perfect. You can hear the awesome power packed into the beast. Just for some basic guidelines, here is some data from the German car Zone containing a BMW M5 acceleration database. Ams 01/1999: 0 – 100 km/h 5,2 s, 0 – 200 km/h 18,6 s. Sportauto: 03/1999 0 – 100 Km/h 5,4 s, 0 – 200 Km/h 18,9 s. Sport auto 7/2001: 0 – 100 km/h 5,1 s, 0 – 200 km/h 16,9 s.

E39 M5 review from the viewers of this vid is summed up by the last German comment that says: ” The E39 M5 is one of the most beautiful car from BMW”.

I think we all know that there are three factors that affect the result of the race: reaction time, power and traction. From the standing start, the E39 M5 did an excellent performance here, beating the other car hands down.

For a ten year old vehicle, this is an amazing result although some viewers commented that the Holden commodore SS VE is certainly no match to the Beast. What do you think?

Here’s a cool racing vid of these two BMW cars that took place in the mountains…I’m just not sure exactly where because many of these videos don’t provide the location.

The two-lane road sure looks like fun however. You can see how it curves and climbs – all great road for the Beast! Most of the vid shows the E39 M5 ahead of the E36 M3. And of course, the sound of these two powerful engines is great for us gear-heads!

During the last few seconds, the E36 M3 overtook the E39 M5. Some people who have written an e39 m5 review say that this is because the E36 M3 is a lighter car and can does better in curve to curve handling. However, some E39 M5 enthusiasts claim that the E39 M5 is the best M5 – and handles incredibly well despite its weight of four thousand pounds. It looks like a friendly race to me.

Here’s the video:

I saw this video today about the new 5 series and thought that it looks better and better ever time I see it. The video is a summary from the top exterior designers from BMW.

A balance of “design beauty and masculine prominence”.

The car is still aimed at the sport market ownership in my opinion and I suspect that there will be more to say about this design. In addition, I look forward to learning about the design considerations for the M5. You can already see the exhaust lower rocker panel that will be changed out to fit the four exhaust pipes as was done from the basic e39 body for the e39 m5.

Here’s the video:

This is a great video that was clearly put together by BMW. It’s in German and would really benefit from some subtitles, but it’s still awesome. I liked it because of the spirit of the M5 driving that was communicated.

The e39 m5 is of course featured right before the e60, but not driven as hard as it is in this video. What I really liked about this vid is how they showcase the sweet looking headers on the e60 m5 engine. They really are a work of art.

Anyway – finally a vid that isn’t shot on the ‘ring entirely. Click below to watch! and if you want to learn about the e39 m5 – check out my video guide.

I just couldn’t resist – but had to watch this vid twice – Nick in his new e39 M5 put the hammer down and showed the camera man (of which I think there were two) how things get done in the beast. Lighting was awesome and the sound from his modded exhaust was sweet.

Thankfully Nick didn’t pile his baby into the snow plow parked on the side of the parking lot – I saw something like that happen once live – and it was actually damn funny.

Nothing like a vid in a back parking lot somewhere to showcase what real torque looks and sounds like. There is one spot in the about the middle of the video where Nick comes through a cloud of melted rubber slowly – kinda reminded me of a scene from a Jason Statham flick – the only think missing for me was a sound track and then some gun fire.

Anyway – here’s the vid – click the image to play it.

Somehow the Brits do a better job of doing car reviews. I’m not sure why, perhaps they are just better at articulating cars than anyone else in the world. Something about a British accent describing high performance cars perhaps. This video review was and still is particularly good because it’s done on the rain testing the first time DSC was built into an M car – the e39 m5. This was and still is such an impressive display of how well the DSC works in the m5.

There’s nothing like taking the Beast out in the rain on an abandoned airstrip. The “back to the future” bit was a bit cheezy at the end if you ask me, but anyway it’s a fun review from ‘way back when’ on the e39 m5.

If you have interest in one that’s more current (and comprehensive), check out the E39 M5 video guide. Anyway, here’s the video. Enjoy.

Well – here’s a vid that will surely get some people mad. I mean – Detroit is trying to show the world how it can best the M5 for almost half the sticker price. This video shows the e60 m5 against the latest Caddy CTS-v in the usually comparisons of speed, slalom and performance specs. The numbers are very very close. Both cars stop in exactly the same distance. The caddy makes it to 60 mph in 0.1 second faster than the M5 and does pretty much the same slalom speed for Motor Trends “figure 8″ course.

The funny thing I noticed while watching this video is that the caddy just isn’t as refined. First of all – off the line it spins the tires way more than the BMW which to me indicates an inferior launch control system. The second thing that I noticed is how much the caddy dives and squats, especially during the brake test. To me this also indicates that the BMW would be a better handling car from the driver’s perspective and the caddy would do what caddy’s do best – and that is “float around”.

The editors don’t talk about what the cars “feel like” to drive.

Of course the BMW costs quite a bit more – but I would rather have that v10 than the overheated 6.3 liter v8 from a company that as of this writing needs the government to keep the operation running. Good job Detroit – but the BMW is still the better car in many many ways.

Having said all that – why not just buy the E39 m5! Dollar for dollar it is STILL an incredible value and there’s lots of them around in great shape – which is exactly why I put the M5 video guide together – so you can successfully and intelligently buy one.
