Should I Upgrade the Original Brake System on the E39 M5?
Many E39 m5 aficionados wonder if they should replace their cars’ original brake system. The original braking system features an all-around ABS brakes that uses single piston sliding calipers to stop the car. While this may not seem like much, this system actually works very well. In fact, many E-39 m5 fans consider this breaking system to be superior to braking systems that are found on more expensive luxury cars like the Porsche Carrera 4s!
Therefore, I think it’s a bad idea to replace the original brake system in your E-39! Here’s why I think this is the case.
First, where are you going to find a braking system that can match the quality of the original system? Dave Zeckhausen might know! Most replacement brake systems can’t match the craftsmanship, durability or the technology BMW used to create the original braking system unless you are buying one of the premium brands like Stop Tech or Brembo. Unless you do, you’ll have trouble finding a replacement braking system that does as a good a job handling the car.
Furthermore, the original breaking system does a remarkably good job handling sudden stops. Even though they may look fragile, the single piston sliding calipers and the ventilated disks are very efficient and work well with the pads to stop the car.
Finally, the original braking system can handle all sorts of driving conditions very well – just not repeatedly. The original braking system does a great job responding to different driving conditions because the brake systems flexible design allows the brakes to work “as needed.” This allows the brakes to respond quickly without over-working themselves. This is perfect for the every-day needs of most drivers for this car.
What do you want? Less brake dust? Faster cooling capacity? Fancy looking drilled rotors and flashy looking calipers?
As a result , you’d be silly to replace the original brake system on the e39 m5 unless you are going to spend a lot of time at the track! Just my opinion – what do you think?
