Replacing Thrust Rod Bushings On Your E39 M5
This do it yourself webpage is helpful for owners of 1999-2003 E39 M5 models. Many drivers have perhaps experienced the shimmy that can occur in the front suspension of the car at speeds between 50 and 60 miles per hour. I talk about this problem in greater detail inside the m5 Video Guide – because I’ve experienced it myself and it’s actually a common wear point on the Beast.
Let us assume that your tires are properly balanced and aligned and your lug nuts are also properly tightened. Then the most probable cause is worn out thrust arm bushings, also know as thrust rod bushings. Removing this part and installing a new thrust arm or just replacing the bushings when the thrust arm has been removed already, can be done by a reasonably experienced DIY owner or car mechanic.
Visit this site and learn about the procedure that is also outlined in the Bentley Manual. There is only one note of caution. Be safe and if you don’t have the right experience, go to a BMW mechanic or local shop. It is not super expensive and I would not like you to damage your car or worst still, yourself. And if you haven’t checked out the M5 Video Guide yet – you may find it helpful if you’re looking for an e39 m5 buyers guide, before you purchase this awesome car and learn about the other common wear points!
