Replacing the Driver Side Intake Cam Position Sensor in your E39 M5

Here is a Do it Yourself overview that could be helpful for E39 M5 owners who have the patience, skills and tools to do this job. Since this is the most difficult of the 4 cam position sensors to to get to, it could be tricky.

You will need the following tools: 10mm Wrench, 5mm Allen wrench, Phillips screw driver and a Peake Research code reader (or other OBD II tool) will come in handy. The actual part you will need is an Intake cam position sensor.

The job entails changing the bank 2 intake cam position sensor which is also known as the USA driver side with the Intake cam position sensor. There is a total of 4 position cam position sensors in the E39 M5. This includes the 2 intakes and the 2 exhausts. Sometimes, they need to be replaced – usually they start to fail after about 60,000 miles. This instruction is for changing one of the 2 intake CPS’s. Read the detailed write up and see the pictures in this M5board discussion site.  I talk more about this repair in the Video Guide.
