Motown Spanks Munich! BMW M5 vs Cadillac CTS-V

Well – here’s a vid that will surely get some people mad.  I mean – Detroit is trying to show the world how it can best the M5 for almost half the sticker price.  This video shows the e60 m5 against the latest Caddy CTS-v in the usually comparisons of speed, slalom and performance specs.  The numbers are very very close.  Both cars stop in exactly the same distance.  The caddy makes it to 60 mph in 0.1 second faster than the M5 and does pretty much the same slalom speed for Motor Trends “figure 8″ course.

The funny thing I noticed while watching this video is that the caddy just isn’t as refined.  First of all – off the line it spins the tires way more than the BMW which to me indicates an inferior launch control system.  The second thing that I noticed is how much the caddy dives and squats, especially during the brake test.  To me this also indicates that the BMW would be a better handling car from the driver’s perspective and the caddy would do what caddy’s do best – and that is “float around”.

The editors don’t talk about what the cars “feel like” to drive.

Of course the BMW costs quite a bit more – but I would rather have that v10 than the overheated 6.3 liter v8 from a company that as of this writing needs the government to keep the operation running.   Good job Detroit – but the BMW is still the better car in many many ways.

Having said all that – why not just buy the E39 m5!  Dollar for dollar it is STILL an incredible value and there’s lots of them around in great shape – which is exactly why I put the M5 video guide together – so you can successfully and intelligently buy one.

  1. the caddy is still an american car and always will be. who wants government motors in the garage just to say that it is .01 seconds faster. I’ll stick with the imports thanks.
