E39 M5 Oil Consumption

There is definitely some concern out there about excessive oil consumption in the E39 M5. There were bigger issues with the car in the 2000 model year, but in subsequent years, better rings were used in the engine with improved alusil on the cylinder walls.

This really helped reduce blow-by.

However, these cars do tend to burn through a bit more oil. It is a higher performance engine and does require more attention in the oil department. Some owners report more consumption than others.

I personally have not had much more than than a quart every 500 miles and I do drive her hard. I talk more at length about whether or not you should use the Castrol synthetic (read: expensive) oil in the s62 engine inside the Video Guide.

Here’s a link to a conversation on the M5 Board about oil consumption.
