Here’s a nice thread to read through, as it takes the reader through the modification process of a beautiful and well-maintained E39 M5. Based in the UK, this right-hand drive 2001 M5 has wanted for nothing in terms of maintenance, getting OEM parts and fluids its entire life. So when the time came to give the car a bit more personality, the base platform was more than ready for the upgrades. Basically, the engine has been made to breath a little easier, with parts that have been proven on the dyno, so much so that with just intake and header mods, the engine now produces 445 horsepower. In the hands of a good driver, you don’t need much more and so the next upgrades were a stiffer and lower suspension, stiffening braces and 6-pot sport brakes with larger rotors.

As you will see from the picture gallery, the upgrades have in no way reduced the value of the car, as there is nothing that cannot be reversed. More than that, the mods haven’t gone overboard, with the add-ons adding to the sporty side of the car. That the reliability of the car hasn’t been compromised is icing on the cake, and this makes this particular E39 M5 one of best daily drivers you could have.

See pics of the car here.

Attending the Import Alliance event in Atlanta, Georgia, this E39 M5 owner apparently didn’t have a very good experience as he grouses on this thread about Hondas and poor organization. Apparently, the venue could hold only 5,000 cars but he reports that the numbers exceeded 10,000. With that kind of number, an event will truly tend to be unwieldy and even rowdy. But that’s to be expected if you invite all marques to such an automotive gathering.

While grousing about Hondas and imports in general, our guy managed to take a few shots of his E39 M5. His car looks very aggressive, and anyone who knows what an BMW M5 is knows that even a stock one can back up the aggressive stance that an owner may decide to impart to his car. One must say though that this look is not exactly conservative, looking more like a street fighter than a brawny executive sedan. But that’s the beauty of the E39 M5. A decade on, it can be as aggressive or sedate as you want it to look and it won’t look as dated as its contemporaries look now.

See E39 M5 pics here.

Officially, there is only one E39 M5 Touring that was ever made. One guesses that it would not be too much of a stretch to do one if you’re the M division’s engineering director. There are a few non-official E39 M5 Touring wagons around and they’d be one of the ultimate sleepers, that’s for sure.

This artist came up with a rendering of a radical E39 M5 that just for the sake of it, was transformed into a Touring model. You have to visit the link to see the transformation. The rendering was done for a competition, with a stock E39 M5 image being the starting point for the rendering. You may not really entirely like the way the vehicle was rendered because it almost looks ricey. But the way this artist transformed the original image, and adding the rear section to make a Touring, is nothing short of amazing. For the skill and effort alone, this work deserves to be seen.

See it here.

You may have seen this pic that’s made the page of a mainstream blog. Entitled “The coolest BMW M5 badge we’ve ever seen”, this picture of BMW’s M5 badge is truly and literally one of the coolest you’ve ever seen. The badge has been coated with different forms of snow, with the bottom part showing crystalline snowflakes, the middle some powdery snow and the top part an accumulation of snow that is what we usually see. The photographer was very lucky in his timing because an hour more of snowfall would probably have covered the badge while some sun would have caused it to melt. In this case, perfect timing enabled this photo to be recorded for posterity.

Catching the snow-covered badging also speaks a bit about how this M5 is used. To be sure, BMW did not intend its M5s to be garage queens but rather daily drivers, in any weather. Seeing the snow on this M5 hints at the fact that this particular car is being used through the winter. Some M-car lovers may cringe at this but isn’t the M5 a family sedan first and a high-performance car second?

See fantastic hi-res pic here.

On this thread, you’ll find pictures of a couple of E39 M5s shod with RDSport RD2 wheels in the 19-inch size. The RD2 wheel is a 5-spoke model with widths that allow you to set up a staggered look on your car. As the original poster did say, this look with a fat rim at the rear isn’t to everyone’s taste. However, it does allow you to fill those wheelwells nicely on your M5.

Aesthetically, these RD2s look very nice on the E39 M5. The spokes look very delicate and contrast nicely with the fat lip that you’d find on a wide rear wheel. Performance-wise though, one wonders if these wheels have the strength to take some hard driving. The S62 is quite the torquey beast and the spokes seem to be a bit on the thin side, seeing that they have see-through centers. We’ll see how these wheels hold up over time. The original poster has some mods on his car that looks to have improved the power nicely and his addition of cosmetic mods has made his E39 M5 a more rounded beast.

As the poster says, this thread is a pic heavy one, so be prepared for slow load times. But it’s going to be worth the wait, because this gallery of an E39 M5 clone (a 528i) shows a nice-looking example of this classic car. The owner says that it will be some time before this BMW M5 gets on the road again because he’s putting it to bed for the winter. Where he’s at, the weather is already turning and you will understand when you see the pics why he’s putting his baby to hibernation mode for a while.

The pictures aren’t run of the mill snapshots, because the owner seems to be an accomplished shutterbug. His pics of the car bring out the best angles and the pics are surprisingly pleasant to look at. When winter hits, the car will receive a few upgrades in the comfort of a garage, ready to hit the road again when the sun comes up and the roads dry out.

Hit this thread for pictures of assorted splitters for the E39 M5. The pictures are all of Le Mans Blue M5s, with the assorted splitter pics in carbon fiber or else painted in body color.

Splitters definitely give a meaner look to the front end of an E39 M5 but that’s it. Unless you have full side skirts and an undertray at the minimum, there’s no aero benefit. Even some E39 M5 aficionados will say that putting splitters on the E39 M5 does not complement its more classically styled shape. On the Bangle-era designs, front splitters definitely look good on the M5 and M3. But for the E39 M5, it’s not as universally accepted.

But the whole point of customizing a car is to make it individual and beautiful for the owner. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if a mod makes an owner smile everytime he steps out of his house, who’s to say it’s ugly?

See the splitter pics here.

At first glance, this picture of the rear of a black E39 M5 must be just like the dozens we E39 M5 aficionados will have seen all these years. Admittedly, this car looks like a pampered example, because it still looks so fresh after all these years. Even the rims are perfect, with no sign of curb rash. All in all, it looks like it just came from the factory. Then again, E39 M5 owners can be fanatical about their cars, for all the reasons we know and appreciate.

What makes the viewer actually give this picture a second look is what is not in the picture. The title for the picture is “Take the back way”. After learning of the title, you look at the picture in a different light because yes, this is the type of car where you look for the twisting and undulating back roads, the better to feel the driving dynamics that E39 M5s are known and respected for. Looking at the picture, your imaginaton runs wild, thinking of shifting at the redline, attacking an apex, hauling on the brakes for a sharp corner then flooring the throttle at the corner exit. Then, after the man and machine interaction, turning on the A/C for a little quiet time and a mutual show of respect and finally parking the car, shutting the engine off and hearing the engine oil drip dripping into the pan as it cools down.

See the picture here and click on the photo to view the large size.

Here’s a page containing various E39 M5 pictures, from clean to outrageous examples. The first picture that greets you is a kitted out silver M5 with blacked out wheel centers, blacked-out grill and black tint. Black lip extensions and black louvers on the vented hood make the ordinarily plain looking E39 M5 very aggressive-looking, and we’re pretty sure it has an exhaust note to match.

Other notable examples of the varied ideas owners have for their cars include an open-top M5, an E39 M5 ute (Australia-speak for pickup), and an M5 that has been converted into a 2-door with E30 M3-looking fender flares. One notable E39 M5 is a white touring version, which was never produced by BMW. Only one official example was ever made, and it was for the engineering director of the M division at that time. Other touring versions have popped up, which are basically E39 Tourings with M5 underpinnings.

Love them or hate them, all these varied E39 M5s may look different from each other, but one thing’s for sure. They all have the same fantastic performance that belies the executive car they all came from.

Whereas the M3 emotes aggressiveness and a sort of willingness to throw the hammer down anytime, the E39 M5 exudes the sense of stateliness that relfects the executive’s car that it is based on.

The two cars pictured are very beautiful and well-kept examples of the M division’s products, and looking at the series of pictures, one can imagine a pair of very fast cars taking on the road. And both cars look best in the pictures that show them on the undulating road sections, where you just know that both cars will be stomping on those roads with aplomb. While both cars’ tailpipes are dead giveaways to what the cars really are, looking at the E39 M5 from the front or the side doesn’t really reveal the nature of the beast. It looks just like the family or executive car that BMW intended it to be, and which continues with the newer generations.
