A Question I Answered From An M5 Video Guide Member
Here is a response that I sent today to one of the M5 Video Guide Members who asked some specific details about costs. I thought this reply might be helpful if you are considering the E39 M5.
Dear [member],First of all, thanks for your interest in the Guide. Second, have you watched all the videos? I discuss many costs and common issues at length throughout the Guide which should be very helpful for you in your research. Exact costs are really hard to nail down in my experience. I’ve helped many people find and buy E39 M5′s and then they have different experiences after the fact in terms of repairing and replacing various items.
For example, in California some guys have reported that clutches costs upwards of $3,000. Whereas my German customers report they can get the same thing done for about half that amount in USD equivalent.
For example – some guys will fix their cars only with genuine BMW parts, whereas others with use aftermarket. Some guys will use BMW to do the service work, whereas some guys will go to a local shop. In some cases people do their own work on the car.
Given these variables, I felt it was best to just let the public know what the common issues are with the car in the Video Guide rather than try to nail the cost of everything – even though I do mention how much many things cost in the video guide.
Having said that – no matter how pristine the car you inevitably find is, you should be prepared to spend about $2,000 per year in regular maintenance (not inclusive of gas and insurance). These cars are more expensive to own. For example, front brakes will run you at least $750 to re and re. You just can’t get around that because the rotors are big and special to the M5. And if you drive the car hard (which I’m hoping you do
), then you’re going to need new rotors sooner than my mother in law who drives a Honda Civic below the speed limit everywhere she goes.
Hope this helps,
All the best,
Brooks.
